It’s official. The FCC voted Thursday to approve net neutrality against the whims of telecom companies and ISPs. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler approved a rule that reclassifies consumer broadband as a utility under Title II of the Communications Act. So what does that mean for security online?
The bad news is nothing has changed, the good news is that… well, nothing has changed. Had ISPs been given the right to allow faster lanes, it may have opened a door to other, different regulations. If telecom companies were to have more control, it would have had a chance to spill over into the security realm or allow ISPs make online security offers. It certainly could have gotten ISP’s involved into data collection to sell to the highest bidder. Bottom line, while it’s not perfect, a free internet means more choices, whether it involves websites, providers, or security protection.
