We’ve all seen movies and read stories about bank robberies. Masked men at gunpoint taking all the contents a physical bank can have. However, what if the robbery was faceless, left no physical evidence, and happened across the world without notice? According to a New York Times report, hackers stole as much as $300 million from over 100 banks across 30 nations using a simple piece of malware.
Carbanak, the email malware program, is responsible for the theft by using an email attachment as a backdoor into the bank’s network. Then hackers could mimic the staff and make online transfers, control ATMs, and more. No banks are willing to public come forward. It goes to show that you should monitor your account closely and contact your bank immediately if you see anything wrong.
