When It Comes to Cybercrime and SMB, Small Businesses = Big Targets
If your company is running a Server Message Block, it can be difficult to keep it secure without a full IT team on staff. Many small businesses have suffered because they relied on a single layer of defense to protect them from cybercriminals. The Hartford Steam Boiler found that more than half of all SMBs have been hacked at one time or another, with 75% unable to restore or recover lost data.
So what are some steps that a company can do to beef up their security? First, only use trusted websites and monitor your activity closely. That way if you spot a problem, you might be able to find the source. Next, use strong, complex passwords and delete unsolicited email. This may seem obvious, but it cannot be overstated. Lastly, be sure your patches are up to date and always run your firewall/anti-virus. This keeps everything protected and upgraded to the latest threats. A little bit of due diligence can protect your accounts and info from others. For a full article on this topic, click here:: 7 Cyber Defense Best Practices for SMBs

Using Nogotofail to Say Yes to Security
While Google, like many, are taking steps to make sure consumers’ devices, emails, and platforms are secure. In order to increase the use of TLS/SSL in all services and platforms, the Android Security team has built “nogotofail,†a tool that scans and confirms whether or not your device or applications are safe from known TLS/SSL vulnerabilities. Nogotfail works on any device that can access the internet, regardless of operating system.
This new development could help any person monitor the security of their devices. Now is the time for more tools that can operate in any OS and build up the protection/use of TLS/SSL. Google has currently released nogotofail as an open source project so that users can become freely protection, but also text the tool and its limitations for future updates. Jailbreaking is Not a Crime (Aside From Breaking Out of Actual Jail)
The Electronic Frontier Foundation said in that it would fight to the keep legal any procedures that allow consumers to customize their smartphones or tablets. They filed a petition with the Library of Congress and Copyright office to extend and expand exemption to all consumers to “jailbreak†their phones without contradicting the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. This is a frustrating process since the EFF has to reargue their case every three years in order to keep the exemption.
Despite it’s name, “jailbreaking†is beneficial when it comes to security. After a device has stopped being supported by a manufacturer, jailbreaking can allow users to install security updates from third parties that will allow them to use the device without worrying about it becoming compromised. Sadly, as the DMCA stands for protecting the copyright of the device software, it has gotten in the way of creating secondary uses, discouraging competition. Reform must be in place and the exemption must be extended indefinitely in this case. Otherwise, it’s just buying a tool and getting sued for making the most use of it.
