When a data breach is discovered, a lot of work takes place. Passwords and encryption change, finding out what data has been taken and if it can be recovered, finding the source of the leak, and other defenses are put into play. With all of that going on and all that money spent, is it worth the effort to find out who was behind the breach?
While we all want to find and punish the responsible parties, it takes a lot of effort. Companies can try to track down cybercriminals, but it usually takes a long time, a lot of luck, and a lot of money to do so. Even if the person is caught, the data usually can’t be returned and it won’t do anything to prevent another breach. The focus should be on how to better security rather than on retribution.
