Cyberattacks and identity theft are genuine concerns in our culture. Without proper security software, diligent updates, and passwords, personal information can be up for grabs. However, researchers have discovered that many cybercriminals are slowly shifting from digital thievery to physical destruction.
The cyber-physical attack Stuxnet, for example, attempted to sabotage centrifuges at Iran Natanz nuclear facility. In order to perform cyber-physical attacks, it would not only require hacking know-how, but engineering knowledge obtained from experience or reconnaissance. The fact that attackers know that they need such know-how and will work to master it puts our power grids and manufacturing plants at risk.
